What is a moissanite?

Moissanite is a stunning and incredibly brilliant gemstone that has gained immense popularity as a desirable alternative to traditional diamonds. Discovered by Nobel Prize-winning scientist Dr. Henri Moissan, who found it in a meteor crater in 1893, moissanite is a naturally occurring mineral composed of silicon carbide (SiC). Moissanites used in jewelry today are typically "lab-grown" moissanites. Moissanite has a hardness of 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale, closest to the hardness of diamond at 10, hence suitable for everyday wear. Its hardness and ability to reflect light rivals that of diamonds without the hefty price tag of mined diamonds.

Size Guide

How to measure ring size

Measuring ring size using the inner circumference is a reliable method to ensure a comfortable and accurate fit. To begin, acquire a flexible measuring tape or a strip of paper. Gently wrap the tape or paper around the finger where the ring will be worn, ensuring it sits snugly but comfortably. Take note of the point where the strip overlaps or meets and mark it with a pen or pencil. Then, lay the strip flat and measure the distance between the marked points in millimeters. This measurement represents the inner circumference of the finger and serves as a precise indicator of the ring size needed. By using the inner circumference, you can select the perfect ring size, ensuring it slides effortlessly onto the finger and sits securely in place, creating a timeless and elegant adornment. When in doubt, always choose the larger ring size for a more comfortable fit.

A Guide to Caring for Your Silver Jewelry

Silver jewelry possesses an enduring charm, admired for its lustrous shine and timeless appeal. Whether it's a delicate necklace, a pair of elegant earrings, or a statement ring, silver pieces can elevate any outfit and add a touch of sophistication to your look. However, to ensure that your silver jewelry maintains its brilliance and beauty for years to come, proper care and maintenance are essential.

1. Preventative Measures:

Your silver jewelry is protected by layers of rhodium or white/rose/yellow gold plating to prevent tarnish. This plating may wear off after some time of normal wear. To prolong the plating layer and prevent tarnish and damage to your silver jewelry, here are some preventative measures you can take:

  • Avoid Exposure to Harsh Chemicals: Remove your silver jewelry before swimming in chlorinated pools, using household cleaners, or applying perfumes, lotions, and hairsprays, as these substances can accelerate tarnishing.

  • Store Properly: Wipe down your jewelry using a silver polishing cloth after each wear to protect your jewelry from tarnish-causing elements. Store your silver jewelry in the ziplock bag provided, in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture.

  • Wear Regularly: Believe it or not, wearing your silver jewelry regularly can actually help prevent tarnish. The natural oils in your skin can help keep the silver shiny and reduce the risk of tarnishing.

2. Cleaning Your Silver Jewelry:

Over time, silver jewelry may tarnish due to exposure to air, moisture, and sulfur-containing substances. To restore its shine and remove tarnish, regular cleaning is necessary. Here are some effective methods for cleaning silver jewelry:

  • Mild Soap-free cleanser and Water: Mix a few drops of mild soap-free cleanser with warm water and gently scrub your silver jewelry and gemstones with a soft-bristled toothbrush or cloth. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and pat dry with a soft towel.

  • Silver Polish: Use a specialized silver polish or polishing cloth to remove tarnish and restore shine to your jewelry. Avoid excessive rubbing, as this can scratch the surface of the silver. If your jewelry piece comes with gemstones, avoid using the silver polishing cloth on the gemstones. The silver cloth has been impregnated with polishing compounds and rubbing it on gemstones may dull the shine.

  • Baking Soda and Aluminum Foil: Create a paste by mixing baking soda with water. Then, place the jewelry on a sheet of aluminum foil in a bowl, add hot water, and let it soak for a few minutes. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft towel. The aluminum reacts with the baking soda to remove sulfur elements from the tarnish. This is a quick and easy way to restore your silver jewelry to its shiny tarnish-free condition. Avoid using this method for pearl and opal jewelry as it may damage delicate pearls and opals.

3. Professional Maintenance:

For stubborn tarnish or intricate designs that are difficult to clean at home, consider seeking professional maintenance from a jeweler. They have specialized tools and techniques to safely clean and restore your silver jewelry to its original brilliance.

4. Inspections:

Regularly inspect your silver jewelry for any signs of damage, such as loose stones, worn-out clasps, or bent prongs. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent further damage and ensure the longevity of your cherished pieces.

Conclusion:

With proper care and maintenance, your silver jewelry can continue to dazzle and delight for generations. By following these simple guidelines for cleaning, preventative measures, and professional maintenance, you can preserve the beauty and brilliance of your silver pieces and enjoy them for years to come. So, embrace the shimmering splendor of your silver jewelry and let it shine bright in your collection!
